Marvel’s Wolverine appeared during Sony’s State of Play broadcast, as expected, showing off fresh gameplay for Insomniac’s upcoming PS5 exclusive.
The extensive gameplay reveal showed Logan chasing down a lead in an area packed with cybernetically enhanced enemies who have kidnapped the Morlocks, including Leech. After beginning the combat sequence with some stealth kills, Wolverine goes all out, dispatching enemies in brutal melee, stabbing foes repeatedly with his adamantium claws and building up a rage meter. As we know, Marvel’s Wolverine is a violent game, and the combat we see in the gameplay reinforces that.
Eventually, Jean Grey turns up and she and Wolverine work together to defeat more enemies, occasionally joining forces for a co-op finisher. It turns out Jean Grey is also working to save the Morlocks, but they can’t prevent the mutants from being driven away in the back of a van. At this point the action transitions into a convoy chase, with Wolverine leaping from vehicle to vehicle as he tries to save the Morlocks. Here we can see a moment where the player mashes the Square button to use Wolverine’s famous Healing Factor ability.
After a dramatic leap into the vehicle carrying the Morlocks, Wolverine soaks up plenty of damage before the gameplay comes to an end. But extended footage shows a number of other well-known characters who also appears in the game, such as Sabretooth, Omega Red, Mystique, and Sentinels.
The mission here shows gameplay that is very different to Insomniac's Spider-Man games, which are open-world adventures. Wolverine, on the other hand, is a narrative driven, linear action game, and while you can dabble with stealth, the focus is very much on killing as quickly as possible, and holding onto the story for dear life.
Marvel's Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026 as one of Sony’s big PS5 exclusives. And don’t expect it to come out on PC, either — Sony is keeping its single-player narrative games PlayStation exclusive from now on.
Here's everything announced at State of Play June 2026 if you need a catch up on what PlayStation has in store.
