Magic’s Foundations Commander Precons Are in Stock at Amazon for MSRP — But There’s a Catch

Magic: The Gathering's new Foundations Commander decks launched alongside the current set, Reality Fracture, and are intended to offer a nice “on-ramp” for new players to jump into the format.

There are five mono-colored decks to collect, and while $30 a pop is a great deal, they’ve been tough to find for MSRP — or at all, depending on where you look.

Thankfully, Amazon has restocked the lot, but there is a catch: You’ll need to buy a bundle of all five. Sadly, you’ll need to pay over the odds to buy them piecemeal, which is admittedly an annoyance if you’ve managed to grab one or two already.

MTG’s Foundation Decks Are Back To MSRP In This Bundle

Despite an MSRP of $30, they’re climbing a little; some of these decks have been reaching as high as $60 (we see you, Tramplesaurus Rex).

Whether we’ve had a fresh print run or not (we’ve asked Wizards of the Coast and are awaiting confirmation either way), it seems more product has made it to store shelves.

The best part is that you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Reign of Dragons is a fun, aggressive deck that’s all about dragons in red, while Wretched Ranks is ripe for upgrades but still fun to build an army of zombies with.

Keen Engineering will teach you the fun of mono-blue (I use that loosely) by having you outmaneuver your foes, and Calling All Angels is a surprisingly powerful precon that’s unsurprisingly all about angels.

So, what about Tramplesaurus Rex? This mono-green behemoth is all about big creatures that swing for big damage. It’s not the most technical of decks, but there are some handy mana ramp cards that’ll slot into any other deck that has access to green. Sadly, it’s still up for $79.95 (via a third-party seller), and I can’t say enough how you should NOT PAY THAT.

As for whether they’re worth buying or not, that depends on how much you’re paying and where you are in your Magic: The Gathering journey. There are alternate arts here for each of the five Commanders, but other than that, each deck is just reprints that you might be happy with – or they might not be for you.

As we said back when these were announced, Starter Decks for Commander are not a new notion, but they’ve not been printed in so long that those ones climbed in price in the years since.
