CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 Loremaster Confirms Year Edgerunners 2 Is Set, Sparking Fan Speculation About Canon Endings

CD Projekt Red loremaster Patrick Mills has revealed the exact year Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 takes place, amid speculation from fans about what it means for the ending of Cyberpunk 2077.

According to Mills, Season 2 takes place not long after you bite the bullet and finally meet Hanako at Embers in Cyberpunk 2077.

"Ok so the thing is that I am seeing a lot of people assuming S2 takes place before 2077 but it doesn't, it takes place in 2078," Mills confirmed in a post on Bluesky. "Moving things forward, time doesn't stop in Cyberpunk."

Mills previously posted about a misunderstanding he had seen in early reviews of the series, but wanted to wait until it was out before dropping a truth nuke.

In Edgerunners Season 2, powerful corporation Arasaka doesn’t quite have the same pull it did during the events of Cyberpunk 2077, which is a hint that the anime takes place after the events of the game. There are also some other smaller and bigger details, but like the loremaster, I don’t want to spoil things for you.

Now they know Edgerunners 2 is set just a year after the events of Cyberpunk 2077, fans are trying to work out what it means for the plot of the game. Some believe it suggests certain endings are canon. Or, perhaps it would be better to say, some believe it suggests certain endings are not canon. In truth, Edgerunners 2 doesn't force CD Projekt into making a decision about canon — a bit like Bethesda's position on Fallout canon in the context of the Amazon TV show, which takes place after all the video games.

The world of Cyberpunk is set to expand further, of course, with the in-development Cyberpunk 2 (where and when the game takes place is yet to be announced). There's also a live-action film in the works, although according to CD Projekt, the Cyberpunk 2077 movie won't retrace the game's steps.

Before all that, Cyberpunk 2077 is set for a surprise Edgerunners 2-themed update this week. CD Projekt has confirmed it features cyberware customization and a new dual-wielding playstyle. CDPR released a similar update to tie into the first season. The Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners update added a short questline that let players track down the cool yellow jacket the protagonist of Season 1 wore. There’s a good chance the new update will come with some similar surprises when it drops on October 22.
