The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Mod Cancelled at Sony’s Request

A PvP multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC is no longer going to be released after the mod maker says it was contacted by Sony Interactive Entertainment and asked not to release the project to the public.

“Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to [be released] this month,” wrote modder Speclizer via social media. “Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released. Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you’ll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own.”

Speclizer uploaded 25 minutes of gameplay for the mod back in June, with clarification the project began in January 2026 and was expected to be ready by this month. Development on the mod included a payment component via Patreon, which is unlikely to have helped it fly under the radar.

The news may come as a disappointment to firm fans of The Last of Us multiplayer, considering Naughty Dog cancelled its own official multiplayer project set in the world of The Last of Us back in late 2023. The studio said, if it had released the game as planned, it would have needed to put all of its resources into post-launch content for years to come, harming its ability to develop future single-player games. In the aftermath of the cancellation, former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida noted that he had played The Last of Us Online and thought it was “great.” The Last of Us Online director Vinit Agarwal also maintains former colleagues still message him to say it was “the best multiplayer game they’ve ever played.”
